Overseas License conversion

If you are an Australian resident rather than a tourist, you can drive in NSW on an international license for three months. However, during this three-month time, you must attend a service centre and convert your overseas driver’s license to an NSW driver’s license. Foreign individuals who hold a current license from a recognized country can easily convert it to an Australian driver’s license within three months of arrival in Australia. Depending on where your international driving license was approved, they may require you to undergo a theoretical or driving test. If you are aged 75 and above, you must pass a medical examination and may be required to take a practical driving test.

There are 4 types of driving licenses you can apply for:

1. Recognized Foreign Licensing Authority A license: applicable for any age.
2. Recognized Foreign Licensing Authority B license: for individuals over 25.
3. Unrecognized license: for individuals over 25.
4. Unrecognized or Recognised Foreign Licensing Authority B license: applicable for people under 25.

Before taking a practical test to acquire your provisional license, you have to pass a Hazard Perception Test. Here your ability to recognize threats will be assessed. If you are under 25, most Australian states require you to log approximately 50 to 120 hours of training driving under the supervision of an instructor with a driver’s license. The number of these driving hours needed varies from state to state.
